A diagnosis turned into a road trip with the one woman he cannot leave alone. Same contract underneath: a man working hard at being unlovable, a woman with every reason to walk away, and ten episodes where an illness drives every decision either of them makes. Difference: a comedy first, at heavy 4 with jokes doing the work the score does here, and it refuses to be noble about any of it.

Hooks early Episode 1. The diagnosis and the kidnapped bride both land immediately, so the road trip starts at once.

Two people wrecked by the same event years earlier, meeting again as adults still paying for it. Same melodrama engine and the same first-love ache with physical damage under it, sixteen episodes at pace 2 that let both of them be avoidant and unpleasant long before they are in love. Difference: the damage is already done when it starts, so nothing is withheld for effect, and at comfort 3 it is patient rather than punishing.

Slow start Episode 3, once the shared history behind the collapse becomes clear.

An illness in the room, and the people who will not leave it. Same terminal clock and the same interest in what a diagnosis does to everybody standing around it, twelve episodes at heavy 5 with no melodrama in the playing. Difference: friendship carries it rather than romance, the pacing is slow on purpose, and it is restrained where this one is orchestrated.

Slow start Episode 3, once the diagnosis is out in the open. It stops being a hangout show.

Star-crossed at maximum volume, with a lead performance doing far more than the script around it. Same appetite for being hurt by a romance, twenty episodes at romance 4 and comfort 1, and the same gap between a high aggregate score and written reviews that barely reach a six. Difference: a court tragedy in period dress at heavy 5, the first four episodes are badly assembled, and the cruelty is political rather than medical.

Slow start Episode 5. The first four are genuinely choppy because of heavy re-editing. Push through them anyway.

A first love with history closing in around it. Same shape of two people meeting at the wrong moment while a force outside them sets the terms, twelve episodes at romance 4 and heavy 5, and the same method of being gentle first so the weight lands later. Difference: Gwangju in May 1980 and real political violence rather than a hospital, and twelve careful hours against twenty crowded ones.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the blind-date deception turns into something real.

A countdown attached to a woman, and a romance built on top of the countdown. Same melancholy and the same use of limited time as the engine, sixteen episodes at romance 4 with photography and a score doing work the script never matches. Difference: a fated bargain rather than a ward, at comfort 3, and it is stylised where this is plain melodrama.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the bargain has terms and a deadline attached to it.

Illness inside a relationship, handled as something two people live with. Same star wattage and the same melodrama register, sixteen episodes at romance 4, and two leads who talk to each other like adults, which almost nothing in this bracket manages. Difference: the condition is psychiatric and daily rather than terminal, it is funny on purpose, and nobody is being ground down to produce an effect.

Slow start Episode 3, once the housemates are all under one roof and the household becomes the setting.
