Because you loved 함부로 애틋하게 2016 · KBS2 · 20 episodes, about 20 hours in total Drama Streaming: Viki, OnDemandKorea Change drama

First loves put back in front of each other when he is a star and she has stopped being soft about work, with an illness on the table early and the whole show built on top of it. An 8.1 from 45,025 ratings against a 4.33 rewatch average and 6.79 for story is exactly right: twenty episodes of engineered anguish, a soundtrack scoring 8.08, and the chemistry between the leads is the entire product. The first four hours are a slog and the middle circles the same standoff, so it earns its second half and then charges full price for it. Everything below is picked for the anguish and the sound of it rather than for the plotting.

Narrow it down 7 of 7

The order is our own call on how close two shows feel, not a score a machine worked out. Closest thing we have means the same experience in a different costume, shares one strong thread means one thing carries over, and same feeling, different angle means it gets you to the same place by another route.

Closest thing we have

A diagnosis turned into a road trip with the one woman he cannot leave alone. Same contract underneath: a man working hard at being unlovable, a woman with every reason to walk away, and ten episodes where an illness drives every decision either of them makes. Difference: a comedy first, at heavy 4 with jokes doing the work the score does here, and it refuses to be noble about any of it.

Hooks early Episode 1. The diagnosis and the kidnapped bride both land immediately, so the road trip starts at once.

Closest thing we have

Two people wrecked by the same event years earlier, meeting again as adults still paying for it. Same melodrama engine and the same first-love ache with physical damage under it, sixteen episodes at pace 2 that let both of them be avoidant and unpleasant long before they are in love. Difference: the damage is already done when it starts, so nothing is withheld for effect, and at comfort 3 it is patient rather than punishing.

Shares one strong thread

An illness in the room, and the people who will not leave it. Same terminal clock and the same interest in what a diagnosis does to everybody standing around it, twelve episodes at heavy 5 with no melodrama in the playing. Difference: friendship carries it rather than romance, the pacing is slow on purpose, and it is restrained where this one is orchestrated.

달의 연인 - 보보경심 려

2016SBS20 ep~60 min~20h total

Shares one strong thread

Star-crossed at maximum volume, with a lead performance doing far more than the script around it. Same appetite for being hurt by a romance, twenty episodes at romance 4 and comfort 1, and the same gap between a high aggregate score and written reviews that barely reach a six. Difference: a court tragedy in period dress at heavy 5, the first four episodes are badly assembled, and the cruelty is political rather than medical.

Slow start Episode 5. The first four are genuinely choppy because of heavy re-editing. Push through them anyway.

Same feeling, different angle

A first love with history closing in around it. Same shape of two people meeting at the wrong moment while a force outside them sets the terms, twelve episodes at romance 4 and heavy 5, and the same method of being gentle first so the weight lands later. Difference: Gwangju in May 1980 and real political violence rather than a hospital, and twelve careful hours against twenty crowded ones.

Same feeling, different angle

A countdown attached to a woman, and a romance built on top of the countdown. Same melancholy and the same use of limited time as the engine, sixteen episodes at romance 4 with photography and a score doing work the script never matches. Difference: a fated bargain rather than a ward, at comfort 3, and it is stylised where this is plain melodrama.

Same feeling, different angle

Illness inside a relationship, handled as something two people live with. Same star wattage and the same melodrama register, sixteen episodes at romance 4, and two leads who talk to each other like adults, which almost nothing in this bracket manages. Difference: the condition is psychiatric and daily rather than terminal, it is funny on purpose, and nobody is being ground down to produce an effect.

Commonly suggested, and wrong

Descendants of the Sun

Recommended on cast wattage and gloss, and the contract is completely different. It is a military romance stapled to a disaster procedural, built out of flirting under fire at comfort 4, and it threatens harm constantly while delivering it rarely. This one puts its illness on the table in the first hour and never looks for a way around it.

If You Wish Upon Me

Offered because both have a terminal diagnosis in them, and the two use it for opposite purposes. That is a hospice drama about care work, sixteen episodes at comfort 4, where the wish-granting gives each hour a clean arc. Here the illness is leverage, reached for whenever the plot needs a stall broken.

Twenty-Five Twenty-One

Offered for the first-love ache, and the ache is nostalgic rather than clinical. Sixteen episodes about a friendship group in 1998, fencing, and the best youth writing of its year, with a framing device it hides from for fourteen hours. What sells this one is two people alone in a room with bad news and a soundtrack, and there is no equivalent of that room over there.

A note on method

Matching starts from attributes we set by hand: pace, how much romance drives the plot, emotional weight, comfort. Then a title only stays if it holds up against the whole run of the show and earns a one-sentence reason for being on this list. Full method.
