Same writer. Park Hae-young wrote both, and it shows in every silence. Three worn-down brothers, one young woman with nothing left to lose, and a neighbourhood that slowly decides to hold them. If you loved the Yeom siblings' unglamorous exhaustion, this is the same wound one register deeper. Difference: there is a surveillance plot running underneath it, so it has a spine of dread Liberation Notes never wants, and it is crueller for much longer before it turns kind.

Slow start Episode 4 is the turn. Before that it just looks bleak.

Jeju instead of Sanpo, and the loneliness is shared out across a whole market town rather than one family. Told in overlapping chapters, so each stretch gives you a different tired adult to sit with. Difference: warmer, and it cries far more openly. It is also an anthology, so no one family gets to accumulate the way the Yeoms do.

Slow start Episode 3 closes the first chapter and sells the anthology format.

A whole life measured in seasons on Jeju, from a stubborn girl to a grandmother. Shares the same conviction that ordinary endurance deserves a camera. Difference: much bigger emotional swings, and a score that wants your tears where Liberation Notes withholds on purpose. It will also make you phone your mother.

Hooks early Episode 2, where the childhood section pays off.

The closest thing to Liberation Notes in romance form: two guarded people in their thirties negotiating a contract marriage because rent in Seoul is a horror story. Same dry humour about wasted commutes and money worries. Difference: it is a romance with an actual plot, so none of the shapeless drifting that is the whole substance of Liberation Notes.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the housemate arrangement starts.

A trauma-cleaning crew clearing out the homes of the newly dead. No romance at all, and that is the point: it is purely about noticing people the world stopped noticing. Ten episodes, so it is the shortest route to this particular ache. Difference: episodic and much gentler, and it is about strangers rather than a family you cannot leave. Grief rather than numbness.

Noh Hee-kyung writing beat cops at a neighbourhood police station. Sits in the same class exhaustion: people doing unglamorous work for not enough money and staying decent about it. Same respect for ordinary lives. Difference: it is a procedural with cases and consequences, so it moves. Nobody here has time to stand in a field saying nothing.
