Crash Landing on You review

Crash Landing on You is the gateway Korean romance, and the first half earns that status. A chaebol heiress is blown across the border in a paragliding accident and lands at the feet of a North Korean captain, who hides her in his village. The village is the real draw. His four soldiers and the neighbourhood wives are funnier and warmer than the love story they surround, and their culture shock carries whole episodes. Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin play the romance straight and restrained, with almost no physical affection for two adults, and it works because both play it as a promise rather than a flirtation. The weak spots are real. The opening episodes are slow and busy with setup, and the heroine reads as spoiled before the script lets her grow. Once the story moves to Seoul the tension leaks out: escape plans repeat, the assassin is never interesting, the chaebol family feud runs long, and the border is far too easy to cross. The second couple is the better written pair, and the finale treats them badly, which sours the last hour. At sixteen episodes of up to ninety minutes, the back third is the price of the front two. Watch it for the village, the squad and the two leads, and expect to be moved by the end. Budget patience for the first few hours and the Seoul stretch. Skip it if you need a tight, plausible plot.
