Park Ji Eun took a being who does not belong here, gave her a past life with the same man, and built the comedy out of a fish-out-of-water learning modern Seoul. Jun Ji Hyun leads both, and the direct comparison is the most useful thing on this page. Difference: the alien plot has a hard deadline built into it, so the middle stretch has a reason to move, and the central pairing works. Watch this one first.

Slow start Episode 3, once she moves in next door and the bickering starts.

Park Ji Eun's best-structured romance. Same instinct for an impossible pairing separated by something neither of them chose, the same comic ensemble propping up the leads, and the same willingness to be sincere in the final act. Difference: the obstacle is a border rather than a species, which grounds it, and it keeps a genuine threat running underneath the comedy the whole way.

Hooks early Episode 2, the moment the village women turn up at his door. The soldiers and the neighbours are the show.

Her most recent, and the funniest sentence-by-sentence. Same rhythm of a wealthy man being humbled, a family circus in the background and a fated-love frame. Difference: it is a marriage in collapse rather than a courtship, so the pleasure is repair instead of discovery, and it runs much heavier in the second half.

Slow start Episode 4, when the in-law hierarchy flips. The chaebol scaffolding takes a while to pay off.

Fated love with the mechanics taken seriously. A woman who remembers a previous life pursuing a man who does not, which is the emotional engine of Blue Sea handled with more restraint and less spectacle. Difference: it is quiet and grounded, with no comic con-artist crew, so the laughs that carry Blue Sea through its slow middle are absent.

Hooks early Episode 1, which is the best hour of the twelve. The premise is fully loaded before the first credits roll.

Fantasy comedy where the joke is total confusion about the rules. Shin Hae Sun carries over from the Blue Sea cast and the pleasure is the same: someone with the wrong instincts loose in the wrong world, playing it broad and getting away with it. Difference: it is a palace farce with real political stakes underneath, and it is much better plotted.

Hooks early Episode 1. A modern chef wakes up as a Joseon queen inside twenty minutes.

A curse, a bloodline and two people who were always going to collide. Same fated-love architecture and identical meters on pace, romance and weight. Difference: it plays sincere rather than comic, so there is no scam-artist wit, and the fantasy rules are enforced rather than treated as decoration.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the spell book is actually opened and the show commits to being a comedy about a curse.
