Because you loved 푸른 바다의 전설 2016 · SBS · 20 episodes, about 20 hours in total Comedy, Drama, Sci-Fi & Fantasy Streaming: Viki Change drama

The appeal is a creature out of her element, a con man who cannot stay cynical, and a Park Ji Eun script that lands a comic set piece every episode. It has the same writer and the same lead as My Love from Another Star and it never came close, for a reason that has nothing to do with the premise: the two leads never catch fire, and the con crew around them is better company than the couple. An 8.3 aggregate against a written-review average of 7.54 covers the rest, and twenty episodes is at least four more than the plot can fill.

Narrow it down 6 of 6

The order is our own call on how close two shows feel, not a score a machine worked out. Closest thing we have means the same experience in a different costume, shares one strong thread means one thing carries over, and same feeling, different angle means it gets you to the same place by another route.

My Love from Another Star

별에서 온 그대

2013SBS21 ep~58 min~20h total

Closest thing we have

Same writer, same star, same premise wearing a different coat. Park Ji Eun took a being who does not belong here, gave her a past life with the same man, and built the comedy out of a fish-out-of-water learning modern Seoul. Jun Ji Hyun leads both, and the direct comparison is the most useful thing on this page. Difference: the alien plot has a hard deadline built into it, so the middle stretch has a reason to move, and the central pairing works. Watch this one first.

Crash Landing on You

사랑의 불시착

2019tvN16 ep~85 min~23h total

Closest thing we have

Park Ji Eun's best-structured romance. Same instinct for an impossible pairing separated by something neither of them chose, the same comic ensemble propping up the leads, and the same willingness to be sincere in the final act. Difference: the obstacle is a border rather than a species, which grounds it, and it keeps a genuine threat running underneath the comedy the whole way.

Hooks early Episode 2, the moment the village women turn up at his door. The soldiers and the neighbours are the show.

눈물의 여왕

Shares one strong thread

Her most recent, and the funniest sentence-by-sentence. Same rhythm of a wealthy man being humbled, a family circus in the background and a fated-love frame. Difference: it is a marriage in collapse rather than a courtship, so the pleasure is repair instead of discovery, and it runs much heavier in the second half.

See You in My 19th Life

이번 생도 잘 부탁해

2023tvN12 ep~70 min~14h total

Shares one strong thread

Fated love with the mechanics taken seriously. A woman who remembers a previous life pursuing a man who does not, which is the emotional engine of Blue Sea handled with more restraint and less spectacle. Difference: it is quiet and grounded, with no comic con-artist crew, so the laughs that carry Blue Sea through its slow middle are absent.

Mr. Queen

철인왕후

2020tvN20 ep~75 min~25h total

Same feeling, different angle

Fantasy comedy where the joke is total confusion about the rules. Shin Hae Sun carries over from the Blue Sea cast and the pleasure is the same: someone with the wrong instincts loose in the wrong world, playing it broad and getting away with it. Difference: it is a palace farce with real political stakes underneath, and it is much better plotted.

Destined with You

이 연애는 불가항력

2023JTBC16 ep~70 min~19h total

Same feeling, different angle

A curse, a bloodline and two people who were always going to collide. Same fated-love architecture and identical meters on pace, romance and weight. Difference: it plays sincere rather than comic, so there is no scam-artist wit, and the fantasy rules are enforced rather than treated as decoration.

Commonly suggested, and wrong

Goblin

The two aired in the same season and Goblin took the year, which is half of why this one is remembered as a disappointment. It is the better show and it is also a completely different offer: a tragedy about immortality with a fated-love frame played for grief. Blue Sea is a comedy with a mermaid in it, and swapping in Goblin swaps the tone entirely.

My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho

The other great interspecies romance, and the pairing is made constantly. It is a broader sitcom with a much smaller world, and it turns serious in a way the first half does not prepare you for. Somebody who wanted Blue Sea's glossy scale and its easy company gets a very different last hour.

The King: Eternal Monarch

Paired for the star power and the parallel-world fantasy. The problem is that its rules are incoherent and it expects you to keep track anyway. Blue Sea is loose with its own mythology but never asks you to work, which is why it stays watchable.

A note on method

Matching starts from attributes we set by hand: pace, how much romance drives the plot, emotional weight, comfort. Then a title only stays if it holds up against the whole run of the show and earns a one-sentence reason for being on this list. Full method.
