Because you loved 별에서 온 그대 2013 · SBS · 21 episodes, about 20 hours in total Comedy, Drama Streaming: Netflix, Viki, OnDemandKorea, Kocowa Change drama

An alien four hundred years into his stay, a vain top actress next door, and twenty-one episodes that only needed seventeen. This is the rough draft of Crash Landing on You: same writer, same shape, less discipline, and a middle stretch that replays its own beats. Jun Ji Hyun is why it survived the decade, and Cheon Song Yi is still the reason people quote this show a decade later. The invented physics is silly, and by then you will not care.

Narrow it down 7 of 7

The order is our own call on how close two shows feel, not a score a machine worked out. Closest thing we have means the same experience in a different costume, shares one strong thread means one thing carries over, and same feeling, different angle means it gets you to the same place by another route.

Crash Landing on You

사랑의 불시착

2019tvN16 ep~85 min~23h total

Closest thing we have

The same writer, six years of practice later. Park Ji Eun builds both the same way: an impossible gap between two people, a comic supporting bench doing real work, and a romance played completely straight underneath the jokes. This is the version where the middle holds and the side characters are as interesting as the leads. Difference: the obstacle is a border and a government instead of physics, so the danger is human rather than theoretical.

Hooks early Episode 2, the moment the village women turn up at his door. The soldiers and the neighbours are the show.

The Legend of the Blue Sea poster

The Legend of the Blue Sea

푸른 바다의 전설

2016SBS20 ep~60 min~20h total

Closest thing we have

Same writer, same lead actress, and close enough to be a remake. A creature out of her element, a con man in place of the actor, and Jun Ji Hyun doing a warmer version of the same register. Difference: the chemistry that carries this show is the exact thing Blue Sea is missing, and it runs four episodes longer than its idea, so the second half is padding with a past-life subplot attached.

Hooks early Episode 2, once she is on land and the fish-out-of-water comedy starts.

Queen of Tears poster

Queen of Tears

눈물의 여왕

2024tvN16 ep~88 min~23h total

Shares one strong thread

Park Ji Eun's most recent, and Kim Soo Hyun's other career part. The same trick of hanging a huge emotional swing off jokes you did not think were load bearing, with a chaebol family in place of the alien premise. Difference: it starts with the marriage already collapsing, so it is heavy 4 grief work rather than a courtship, and the comedy has to fight for room.

Slow start Episode 4, when the in-law hierarchy flips. The chaebol scaffolding takes a while to pay off.

Goblin poster

Goblin

도깨비

2016tvN16 ep~75 min~20h total

Shares one strong thread

The immortal and the mortal, done as tragedy instead of farce. Same central ache of a being who has outlived everyone and a woman with a normal lifespan, and the same willingness to spend a whole episode on two people talking. Difference: Goblin is built to hurt where this one is built to charm, and it treats four hundred years as a real weight rather than a premise.

Slow start Episode 8. Everything before it is mood, rules and comedy, and the buildup asks for real patience. From episode 8 the show stops explaining itself and starts spending.

While You Were Sleeping poster

While You Were Sleeping

당신이 잠든 사이에

2017SBS32 ep~30 min~16h total

Same feeling, different angle

Same director, same trick of a superpower used for small human problems. Oh Choong Hwan shoots romance like it is worth taking seriously, and the premonition premise gives every episode a clean job to do. Difference: it is a case-driven procedural at pace 4, so the plot never idles the way twenty-one episodes here have to.

Hotel del Luna poster

Hotel del Luna

호텔 델루나

2019tvN16 ep~75 min~20h total

Same feeling, different angle

Oh Choong Hwan again on a romance measured in centuries. A being who cannot age paired with somebody who will, plus the same appetite for a set piece and a costume change. Difference: the tone is guilt rather than comedy, the comic bench is thinner, and it never lets the comedy rescue anybody, which this show would never dare.

Lovely Runner poster

Lovely Runner

선재 업고 튀어

2024tvN16 ep~70 min~19h total

Same feeling, different angle

Fangirl devotion as the engine, pointed the other way round. A woman whose whole interior life is organised around one famous man, played sincerely rather than mocked, where here the famous one is Cheon Song Yi herself and the devotion is the alien's. Same time premise raising the price every hour. Difference: it is 2024 and it moves, sixteen tight episodes with no slack middle and a loop that forces the plot forward every hour.

Hooks early Episode 2, the first jump back. Be warned: the lead's fan-girl register in the first two episodes is a lot to take, and it settles around episode 6.

Skip these

Commonly suggested, and wrong

The Master's Sun

The default 2013 supernatural romcom to reach for next, and it runs on dread. Ghosts turn up to frighten, the comedy comes from panic rather than vanity, and the female lead is fragile where Cheon Song Yi is monstrous. The pleasure here is a woman with no shame at all, and this replaces her with somebody who needs protecting.

The Heirs

Paired with it because both were the 2013 event drama with the same wattage of cast. It is a high school class war with no jokes worth the name and a hero whose main activity is brooding at a staircase. Nothing in it is funny, and funny is the entire reason to watch this.

Boys Over Flowers

The classic gateway everyone gets handed, and it has aged three times worse than this has. The romance is built on wearing a woman down, the comedy is broad without being sharp, and there is no performance in it doing what Jun Ji Hyun does. Start somewhere else.

A note on method

Matching starts from attributes we set by hand: pace, how much romance drives the plot, emotional weight, comfort. Then a title only stays if it holds up against the whole run of the show and earns a one-sentence reason for being on this list. Full method.
