Difference: it is set now, with no decade to be nostalgic about and no guessing game, and the parents who are half of why Reply 1988 works are not in it.

Hooks early Episode 2, when the band and the friendship rhythm take over from the medical cases.

The ensemble instinct of Reply 1988 moved to present-day Jeju and made a little sadder. You get the same pleasure of a community where every side character eventually gets their own chapter. Difference: adult, present-day and considerably sadder. No alley to come home to.

Slow start Episode 3 closes the first chapter and sells the anthology format.

Same creative team, unlikeliest setting. A prison block becomes a neighbourhood: shared meals, running jokes, and men looking after each other badly. Funnier than it has any right to be. Difference: no families, no romance to speak of, and the setting keeps a thread of real menace running that Reply 1988 never has.

Where the series started. Rougher, cheaper, faster, and much more about first love than about parents. Watch it if you want the nostalgia and the husband-guessing game without the twenty-hour commitment. Difference: it belongs to the teenagers, so the parents, who are the reason Reply 1988 lands, are barely in it.

Hooks early Episode 1. It moves fast and the fangirl comedy lands immediately.

Trades the alley for a lifetime, and it will wreck you harder than Reply 1988 ever does. Same core belief: your parents had a whole life before you and it was difficult. Difference: one couple across forty years instead of five households in one, so it accumulates rather than hangs out.

Hooks early Episode 2, where the childhood section pays off.

Not a period piece, but it is the same warmth with the sad parts filed off. A campus, a friend group, no villains, and a romance built on being fond of someone rather than fated to them. Difference: no ensemble of parents and no nostalgia, and it is a straight romcom. Half the emotional range and none of the ache.
