The first Reply, the cheapest looking one, and the funniest. A Busan fangirl in 1997 organising her whole life around H.O.T was comedy nobody else was making, and the show understands teenage obsession without condescending to it. The husband guessing game is a gimmick, but it is played fairly and settled early, which the later Replies never manage. Sixteen episodes against the twenty of 1988, a flat production and a clumsy reunion frame are the price. If Reply 1988 plays as a bereavement, this one is a party, and it is the right place to start the series.
As a teen, Shi Won was obsessed with a boy band. Now 33 years old, Shi Won and her friends are reviving their memories as their school reunion nears.
Hooks early Episode 1. It moves fast and the fangirl comedy lands immediately.
