History as the thing that decides whether love is allowed. Same structure: a nation being taken apart and a romance that has to be conducted in the gaps. Both are beautiful and both are cruel about it. Difference: it is slower, more political, and it never once offers you a way out.

Slow start Episode 5, once all three men circling her are in play. The opening hours are a history lesson, and the real barrier is the writing register: the dialogue is elliptical and the flashbacks last seconds, and that is where it either has you or loses you.

Devotion inside a court that forbids it. Both are about a man with power who cannot use it to get the one thing he wants, and both stage restraint better than most shows stage passion. Difference: it stays inside the palace, so there is no war and no separation across a country.

Slow start Episode 3, the first time she refuses him and the show reveals what it is actually about.

Doomed love with a body count. Same appetite for a romance where politics keeps winning, and the same willingness to let the leads lose. Difference: the fantasy framing and the time-slip device soften the history into legend.

Slow start Episode 5. The first four are genuinely choppy because of heavy re-editing. Push through them anyway.

Two people trying to have a private life during a national event. Same collision of tenderness and state violence, compressed into twelve hours. Difference: it is set in 1980 and it is twelve episodes long, so it hits harder and faster.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the blind-date deception turns into something real.

A woman rebuilding her own status inside a rigid system. Same pleasure in period competence and in a romance that has to be negotiated around class. Difference: the tone is adventurous and the stakes are personal rather than national.

Hooks early Episode 1. A slave takes a dead noblewoman's name and starts practising law with it, and the first three hours are the highest rated of the run.

Period melodrama with an unresolvable relationship at its centre. Same mournful key and the same interest in what a family will conceal to survive. Difference: it is a mystery first, and the romance is deliberately uncomfortable.

Hooks early Episode 1. A missing heir returns and nobody in the house believes he is who he says.
