Because you loved 세작, 매혹된 자들 2024 · tvN · 16 episodes, about 19 hours in total Drama, War & Politics, Mystery Streaming: Netflix Change drama

Sixteen episodes of palace politics with genuine teeth, wrapped around a romance that never generates the heat the premise promises. Jo Jung Suk is commanding, the spying finally has consequences at episode eight, and the board-game conceit that is the most interesting structural idea gets dropped long before the end. The picks are sorted by which half you were actually watching for: the throne, or the two people losing to it.

Narrow it down 6 of 6

The order is our own call on how close two shows feel, not a score a machine worked out. Closest thing we have means the same experience in a different costume, shares one strong thread means one thing carries over, and same feeling, different angle means it gets you to the same place by another route.

The Red Sleeve

옷소매 붉은 끝동

2021MBC17 ep~80 min~23h total

Closest thing we have

A palace romance where the power gap is treated as a problem instead of as chemistry. Seventeen episodes in which a court lady wants to stay her own person, the historical detail is unusually careful, and the show argues with itself rather than swooning. The closest match here for a Joseon love story that refuses to be comfortable. Difference: The Red Sleeve sags in the middle and its court scheming is thin next to the central relationship, which is the opposite balance to this one.

Shares one strong thread

An identity nobody in the house believes, worked as a mystery inside a great-looking Joseon. Eleven episodes, gorgeous production, real suspense in the first half, and a lead pair with intense chemistry doing exactly what this show wanted from its two. Difference: Dear Hongrang rushes its politics in the back half and its answer is less interesting than its question, where this keeps the political machinery credible all the way through.

My Dearest

2023MBC21 ep~70 min~25h total

Shares one strong thread

Period romance with history pressing on it, and it commits where this one hesitates. Twenty-one episodes of slow-burn separation across an invasion, built on writing that trusts silence over dialogue and two leads who can hold it. Difference: My Dearest is far heavier and its clock is a war rather than a court, so the tension comes from the outside instead of from a throne room.

The Tale of Lady Ok

옥씨부인전

2024JTBC16 ep~70 min~19h total

Same feeling, different angle

The other 2024 Joseon show about a person surviving on a borrowed name. Sixteen episodes of identity fraud and courtroom nerve, dense politics, a romance that works, and the first three hours are the best in the run. Difference: The Tale of Lady Ok is a thriller with cases to win, so it moves at four times this pace and never asks you to wait eight hours for a turn.

Hooks early Episode 1. A slave takes a dead noblewoman's name and starts practising law with it, and the first three hours are the highest rated of the run.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo

달의 연인 - 보보경심 려

2016SBS20 ep~60 min~20h total

Same feeling, different angle

Court tragedy that does not blink, and a romance the politics eat alive. Twenty episodes, Lee Joon Gi giving the performance of his career, and a first four hours that are badly assembled enough to lose people. Same appetite for a love story that loses to a throne. Difference: Moon Lovers is cruel and long and does not reward a second visit, where the pleasure is all in the hurt.

Uncle Samsik

삼식이 삼촌

Same feeling, different angle

If it was the political machinery you stayed for, this is that with no romance in the way. Sixteen episodes about two men whose partnership is doomed by the period they live in, slow and talky and dense with detail that demands attention. Song Kang Ho grounds it and Byun Yo Han matches him. Difference: Uncle Samsik is 1960s Korea rather than a Joseon court, and there is nothing decorative in it at all.

Commonly suggested, and wrong

Under the Queen's Umbrella

The reflex recommendation whenever palace politics are the request. It is a competition between mothers played with real wit and a much brisker rhythm, so the slow melancholy that defines this show is not part of the offer.

Moonlight Drawn by Clouds

Suggested constantly as the next sageuk romance. Its first ten hours are close to perfect comfort television with teenagers at the centre, which is a completely different weight class from a court drama about people who have already lost.

The King's Affection

Named against this for the hidden-identity-in-the-palace comparison. It is a youth romance with a disguise and a large young cast, and the political calculation that gives this show its spine is decoration there.

A note on method

Matching starts from attributes we set by hand: pace, how much romance drives the plot, emotional weight, comfort. Then a title only stays if it holds up against the whole run of the show and earns a one-sentence reason for being on this list. Full method.
