Difference: The Red Sleeve sags in the middle and its court scheming is thin next to the central relationship, which is the opposite balance to this one.

An identity nobody in the house believes, worked as a mystery inside a great-looking Joseon. Eleven episodes, gorgeous production, real suspense in the first half, and a lead pair with intense chemistry doing exactly what this show wanted from its two. Difference: Dear Hongrang rushes its politics in the back half and its answer is less interesting than its question, where this keeps the political machinery credible all the way through.

Hooks early Episode 1. A missing heir returns and nobody in the house believes he is who he says.

Period romance with history pressing on it, and it commits where this one hesitates. Twenty-one episodes of slow-burn separation across an invasion, built on writing that trusts silence over dialogue and two leads who can hold it. Difference: My Dearest is far heavier and its clock is a war rather than a court, so the tension comes from the outside instead of from a throne room.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the war arrives and the tone hardens permanently.

The other 2024 Joseon show about a person surviving on a borrowed name. Sixteen episodes of identity fraud and courtroom nerve, dense politics, a romance that works, and the first three hours are the best in the run. Difference: The Tale of Lady Ok is a thriller with cases to win, so it moves at four times this pace and never asks you to wait eight hours for a turn.

Court tragedy that does not blink, and a romance the politics eat alive. Twenty episodes, Lee Joon Gi giving the performance of his career, and a first four hours that are badly assembled enough to lose people. Same appetite for a love story that loses to a throne. Difference: Moon Lovers is cruel and long and does not reward a second visit, where the pleasure is all in the hurt.

If it was the political machinery you stayed for, this is that with no romance in the way. Sixteen episodes about two men whose partnership is doomed by the period they live in, slow and talky and dense with detail that demands attention. Song Kang Ho grounds it and Byun Yo Han matches him. Difference: Uncle Samsik is 1960s Korea rather than a Joseon court, and there is nothing decorative in it at all.
