Captivating the King
세작, 매혹된 자들Checked and re-read
A sageuk romance that takes eight episodes to reach its hook and never fully recovers from the wait. Jo Jung Suk is commanding as the king and the palace politics have genuine teeth, but the romance never generates the chemistry the title promises, and Shin Se Kyung's role is underwritten relative to the screen time it occupies. The Go game conceit is the most interesting structural idea and it is abandoned too early. An 8.0 from around eight thousand rating voters, and the gap between the political thriller and the love story is the entire problem.
Amid a royal and political power struggle, a king entangles with an intriguing woman — whose hidden desire for revenge transforms into unintended love.
Slow start Episode 8, where the spying finally has consequences. Getting there takes eight slow hours.
