Sul Kyung Gu and Kim Hee Ae trade moves for twelve episodes with no filler between them, which is the fix for this show's baggy middle. Difference: it is entirely modern and entirely procedural, with none of the period texture.

Period Korea as a place where a decent man is slowly turned into an asset. Both are about loyalty being spent, and both are shot with real specificity about their decade. Difference: it is undercover crime with a marriage at its centre, and the violence is present rather than implied.

History as something that happens to people who thought they were making the decisions. Kim Eun Sook writing Korea under Japanese pressure, and the closest match here for watching a country get built and sold in the same scene. Difference: twenty-four episodes at eighty minutes, and it does not respect your time.

Slow start Episode 5, once all three men circling her are in play. The opening hours are a history lesson, and the real barrier is the writing register: the dialogue is elliptical and the flashbacks last seconds, and that is where it either has you or loses you.

The same postwar Korea, from the street rather than the cabinet. Ten episodes of a young detective and his squad working cases in a country with no forensics and a great deal of corruption, and the period detail is genuinely good. Difference: it is a comedy with a warm team at the centre, so the register is light where this is grim.

Two men and one plan to own everything, in a modern suit. Same bargain, same partner problem, same understanding that success is what kills the arrangement. Difference: it holds together for four hours and then the plotting starts inventing conveniences, so treat it as the shorter, weaker version of this idea.

1950s Korea rendered with total specificity, in a world nobody dramatises. Both are period pieces that care more about craft and vocation than about plot mechanics, and both are carried by one enormous performance. Difference: it is a story about a theatre troupe and a dream, with no politics and no crime.

Slow start Episode 4, once the troupe accepts her and the rivalry has something at stake.
