Difference: it runs across two seasons and its terms are gentler, which is a deal Mr. Sunshine never offers.

The same argument in twelve episodes instead of twenty-four: two people meeting at the exact moment their country is about to do something unforgivable. Golden, unbearably pretty, and structured so that you know roughly what is coming and cannot stop watching anyway. Difference: 1980 rather than 1900, much smaller in scope, and it hurts faster.

A king who chooses one woman and a woman who keeps choosing her own freedom instead, played with the same restraint and the same understanding that a hand not taken is the whole scene. Slow start Episode 3, the first time she refuses him and the show reveals what it is actually about.

If what actually moved you was the resilience rather than the rifles. Decades of Korean twentieth-century hardship carried by ordinary people who keep going, with the same belief that endurance is the story worth telling. Difference: it is domestic and intimate, no colonial occupation and no armed resistance, and it is kind to you in a way Mr. Sunshine never is.

For the doomed-grandeur register in a sageuk. Power won at the direct expense of love, and twenty episodes of political manoeuvring that never blink. Difference: the first four episodes are genuinely choppy from re-editing, and the fantasy framing is nothing like Mr. Sunshine's documentary seriousness about real events.

The modern-dress version of the same thesis: that the times can simply overrule two people who were right for each other. Same use of a national crisis as the thing that decides a private life. Difference: it is a coming-of-age drama about fencing and friendship, so the scale and the stakes are ordinary. The ache is the only shared component.
