If the part you loved was the yearning and the court. A king and a court lady who both know exactly what the relationship will cost, in the best-acted sageuk romance of the last decade. Difference: no fantasy at all, and it is playing by the historical record rather than by genre rules. Bring tissues.

Slow start Episode 3, the first time she refuses him and the show reveals what it is actually about.

Sworn fates, a palace full of brothers who will destroy each other, and the same sense of a world large enough to actually live inside. Difference: the first four episodes are rough because of heavy re-editing, and it is a court tragedy that never once looks for a way out. It is still worth the twenty episodes, but go in knowing what kind of show it is.

For the rules. A world with an internal logic the plot obeys and then weaponises, at a pace nothing else on this list comes close to matching. Difference: it is a meta thriller rather than a fantasy epic, and there is no ensemble family. Two people and a mechanism.
