Slow start Episode 3, the first time she refuses him and the show reveals what it is actually about.

Hidden identity in the palace, played as farce. Same engine of somebody at court who is not who everybody thinks, same comic energy from the disguise, and Shin Hae Sun carries the whole thing. Difference: it is a body-swap comedy at pace 4 with genuinely nasty politics underneath, so it is sharper and much funnier.

Hooks early Episode 1. A modern chef wakes up as a Joseon queen inside twenty minutes.

The same season, the same fantasy, and the soft version against the brutal one. Moon Lovers is the show this one is watched next to and often watched after, because it is the identical sageuk romance apparatus turned tragic: same period costume grandeur, same prince who cannot simply choose. Watch this one for cute and that one for grief. Difference: heavy 5 against heavy 2, and it is the most punishing watch on the palace-romance shelf.

Slow start Episode 5. The first four are genuinely choppy because of heavy re-editing. Push through them anyway.

Park Bo Gum, and first love handled with the same gentleness. Same instinct that the most interesting thing in a scene is a young man who cannot say what he means, same comfort in a large affectionate cast. Difference: modern setting, no palace and no politics, and the romance is a puzzle withheld across twenty episodes.

Slow start Episode 3. The first two are scene-setting and the neighbourhood has not clicked yet.

Joseon comedy where the outsider changes the court. Same shape of a commoner with the wrong skills arriving at the palace and rewriting how it works, played light. Difference: it is a 2025 fusion sageuk that is openly unserious about history, so the earnest romance at this show's centre is replaced by spectacle.

Slow start Episode 3, once the cooking competition format kicks in. The ratings peak at episode 4 and never get back there.

Same director, same 2016 star-vehicle instincts. Baek Sang Hun again on a romance built to sell two leads at the peak of their popularity, with the same glossy scale and the same crowd-pleasing structure. Difference: it is a modern military romance, so the sageuk pleasure is gone entirely and the obstacle is a war zone rather than rank.

Hooks early Episode 1. The meet-cute and the deployment are both loaded inside the first hour.
