Friendship and mortality with the screen time shared out properly. A group of women who have known each other for decades, each with her own crisis, and a show that never picks a favourite and starves the rest. Difference: they are in their seventies, there is no romance to speak of, and it is far more direct about death, which is what makes the balance possible.

Slow start Episode 3, once the friend group's shared history stops being backstory.

Son Ye Jin doing the other side of the same adult loneliness. A woman in her thirties whose life is being narrated by everybody else, filmed with the same soft naturalism and the same interest in the small humiliations of office and family. Difference: it is a romance first, and its second half collapses under a mother and a workplace plot that the show cannot resolve.

Hooks early Episode 1. The two of them are already loaded before either one admits it.

Adults stuck, told without a diagnosis to organise it. Same appetite for people in their late thirties admitting out loud that they are unhappy, and the same refusal to fix them with an event. Difference: pace 1, rural, no glamour and no illness, so there is no clock forcing anybody to be honest.

Slow start Episode 3, once Mr Gu starts drinking with Mi-jeong. Before that it is deliberately airless.

Jeon Mi Do again, in the friendship show Thirty-Nine was sold as. Five friends, decades of shorthand, and a structure that gives each of them equal room instead of appointing a lead. Difference: comfort 5, no terminal arc driving it, and the tears come from patients rather than from one of the five.

Hooks early Episode 2, when the band and the friendship rhythm take over from the medical cases.

Dying as a road trip instead of a hospital. Same insistence that somebody at the end of their life keeps being annoying, funny and specific rather than becoming a saint. Difference: it is crude and comic on purpose, and the central relationship is an ex-couple rather than a friendship.

Hooks early Episode 1. The diagnosis and the kidnapped bride both land immediately, so the road trip starts at once.

Time as the antagonist, handled with a structural trick. Same subject underneath: the gap between the life you expected at forty and the one you have. Difference: heavy 5, and it is formally much stranger than a slow-burn friendship piece.

Slow start Episode 4. Sit with the confusion, it is doing work.
