The Apartment Job

A building full of tenants, a man with the wrong skill set, and the tenants become his crew. Twenty episodes of cartoon violence played completely straight, with the plaza and its residents doing more work than the revenge plot. The closest match here for crime comedy at neighbourhood scale. Difference: Vincenzo is at least four episodes too long, its pleasure is all in the surprise, and it rewatches poorly.

Slow start Episode 3, when the Geumga Plaza tenants stop being obstacles and become his crew.

A district taken apart by people who should not be able to beat it, and the funniest action comedy Korea has made. Forty half hours of rage played as slapstick, a conspiracy that stays tidy for the length, and no pretence of being about anything deeper than bad men losing. Difference: The Fiery Priest is a much bigger commitment and its comedy is louder, so the domestic scale here is replaced by volume.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the priest, the prosecutor and the detective are stuck in the same room.

Men past their prime, deeply unserious about themselves and lethal anyway. Ten episodes of a retired operative with two friends and one impossible skill set each, moving fast and refusing to explain physics. Difference: Agent Kim Reactivated is an action show first, so the community politics that give this its comedy are not part of the deal.

Hooks early Episode 1. A retired operative, a taken daughter, and no interest in explaining physics. The pace only breaks at episodes 8 and 9.

A team of misfits handed authority they have no idea how to use. Sixteen episodes, well staged action, and a cast better than the script they are working with. Difference: Good Boy has no consequence in it, so its loop is visible by the fourth hour where this keeps escalating a single scheme.

Hooks early Episode 1. Retired Olympians are recruited into a police unit and the tone is set immediately. The structure after that is a loop rather than a build.

Somebody working a long con from inside an institution, played for comedy first. Sixteen episodes with a disguise that stops being the joke at episode three and a well engineered turn into a caper. Difference: Undercover Miss Hong is a period workplace story rather than a neighbourhood one, and two episodes too long.

Slow start Episode 3, once the disguise stops being the joke and the fraud case starts moving. The setup hour is the weakest thing in sixteen episodes.

Direct correction of people who own the place they abuse, with real catharsis on offer. Ten episodes, a format set inside the first hour, and a lead who carries the violence convincingly. Difference: Teach You a Lesson films graphic bullying for maximum discomfort before each correction, so it is a much harsher watch than a comedy about a residents' committee.
