The Fiery Priest is a loud crime comedy, and it knows exactly what it is. Kim Nam Gil plays Kim Hae Il, a former intelligence agent turned Catholic priest with a temper no confessional can hold, who goes after the corrupt district that buried the death of the old priest who took him in. He ends up stuck with a cowardly detective played by Kim Sung Kyun and an ambitious prosecutor played by Lee Ha Nee, who steals every scene she is handed. The show runs on slapstick, parody and fights staged for laughs, and it holds that register from the first hour to the last. Come for that and it pays off. The team is a joy, the villains are easy to hate and every takedown lands. Come expecting Signal and it will lose you early. The corruption plot is familiar, the bad guys are obvious from the start and a few characters play dumb because the joke needs them to. That is a choice about tone, not a failure of the writing, and it is the whole reason the show works for the people it is built for. The opening hours are the broadest stretch, while the pieces are laid out and the three leads are still working against each other. Once they become a team the comedy gets sharper and the stakes start to matter. Romance barely registers, and it never pretends to be about anything deeper than watching bad people lose. Watch it for Kim Nam Gil, a great ensemble and a long run of satisfying takedowns. Skip it if you want a tight, serious thriller, because this one is built to make you laugh first.
People commit variety of ugly crimes these days. However, they forgive themselves by giving testimony every week. They believe that they can repent just by having faith. But the truth is that they have faith to repeat the sins again and again without remorse. These people atone for their evil deeds just to feel comfortable and carefree. It is not about the victims who are suffering because of them. They say every people are equal before the religions. But it is time to discriminate people who only uses them for their interest. Screening if they are really good people, punishing if they deserve to be punished, and defending justice is needed for modern day religion. A priest with this sense of justice teams up with a detective and a prosecutor. They try to solve the mysterious death of an elderly priest and serve justice.
