Jin Soo Wan again braiding a present-day protagonist into a past he did not live through, and both shows are really about learning what the previous generation paid. Identical meters across pace, romance, weight and comfort. Difference: it is a youth fantasy about parents rather than a political one about a nation, so it is lighter and much less angry.

Hooks early Episode 2, once he lands in 1995 and meets his father at eighteen.

The occupation taken absolutely seriously. Same period, same subject of people choosing resistance knowing the cost, and the same conviction that the country's history is worth a prestige budget. Difference: heavy 5 and comfort 1 against heavy 3 and comfort 4, with pace 2, so it is slow, enormous and genuinely bleak.

Slow start Episode 5, once all three men circling her are in play. The opening hours are a history lesson, and the real barrier is the writing register: the dialogue is elliptical and the flashbacks last seconds, and that is where it either has you or loses you.

Romance under an occupation, and it does not soften any of it. Same premise that the love story and the historical catastrophe cannot be separated, same willingness to spend a whole season on a promise. Difference: it is a war melodrama with no supernatural frame and no comedy, so the buoyancy of the present-day half here has no counterpart.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the war arrives and the tone hardens permanently.

Same director, and the same command of a dual timeline. Kim Chul Gyu again cutting between a past that explains everything and a present that cannot see it. Difference: it is a contemporary thriller about a marriage built on a lie, so the historical romance is replaced by suspense.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the wife starts investigating her own husband. Episode 1 opens with a scene that is hard to sit through.

A life rewritten, and time as the antagonist. Same structural game of a story that knows it is a story, and the same emotional payload underneath the device. Difference: heavy 5 and comfort 2, it is a devastating contemporary drama about ageing, so the period adventure is entirely absent.

Slow start Episode 4. Sit with the confusion, it is doing work.

An obligation carried across lifetimes until it is settled. Same idea that somebody has been waiting a very long time and the story is the discharge of that debt. Difference: it is a fantasy hotel procedural with an episodic structure, so the single historical narrative that Chicago Typewriter is built on is replaced by cases.

Slow start Episode 3, once the hotel staff get histories of their own.
