Occupation-era Korea taken seriously as a setting. Same period, same weight given to collaboration and resistance, same interest in who profits. Difference: no monster, no genre relief, and the pace is stately across twenty four episodes.

Slow start Episode 5, once all three men circling her are in play. The opening hours are a history lesson, and the real barrier is the writing register: the dialogue is elliptical and the flashbacks last seconds, and that is where it either has you or loses you.

A romance conducted while the country is being taken apart. Same balance of melodrama and history, with a lead who is flippant about everything except one person. Difference: it is a sageuk with no horror element and much better writing in its second half.

Historical setting, literal monster, romance intact. Same commitment to a creature with folklore behind it and a couple at the centre. Difference: it is a sageuk fantasy with comedy, so the dread never accumulates.

Slow start Episode 3, once the spirit and the palace politics are properly entangled. Sixteen episodes is four more than the story has.

Period mystery about what a family buried. Same interest in an era's secrets and in an identity that does not check out. Difference: no creature and no institution, just one house and a very uncomfortable relationship.
