When the Phone Rings

The purest version of the same setup: a spouse who is not who they claim to be, and a partner whose job is finding people exactly like that. The domestic scenes carry more menace than the crime scenes, which is precisely why the phone call worked. Difference: the crime is serial murder and the tone is much colder, so the comfort of a happy household is never really available.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the wife starts investigating her own husband. Episode 1 opens with a scene that is hard to sit through.

A marriage on the way to divorce, a husband hiding what he actually feels, and a wife hiding what is actually happening to her. Same engine of two people negotiating through half-truths, played for melodrama rather than menace. Difference: it is sixteen hours of family and money instead of twelve hours of plot, and it cries where your show clenched.

Slow start Episode 4, when the in-law hierarchy flips. The chaebol scaffolding takes a while to pay off.

The other 2024 show that treats a bad marriage as a puzzle to be solved with information. Tight plotting, escalating traps, and a heroine who stops asking permission early. Difference: the fantasy premise is up front and the villains are broad, so it plays as satisfaction rather than suspense.

Hooks early Episode 1. She dies, wakes up ten years earlier, and starts redirecting her own murder inside the first hour.

If the pull was the withheld information and the drip feed of who knew what, this is that at a professional level: a cold case, a suspect nobody can clear, and a structure built on partial answers. Difference: there is no marriage and barely any romance, so the tension is entirely procedural.

Hooks early Episode 1. A profiler is the prime suspect in her own uncle's murder, and the puzzle cards start arriving immediately.

Betrayal inside a family business, with a lead who has to keep performing loyalty to people trying to destroy him. Same pleasure in watching somebody hold two faces at once. Difference: it is money and power rather than intimacy, and it takes until the back half to get properly moving.

Slow start Episode 7, and it genuinely improves from there: the ratings climb through the back half and the last two hours are the best of the run.

A stranger arrives claiming an identity nobody can verify, and an entire household decides to believe him anyway. The best scenes are two people lying to each other while falling for each other. Difference: it is a Joseon melodrama with a much slower pulse and a mystery at its centre rather than a thriller.

Hooks early Episode 1. A missing heir returns and nobody in the house believes he is who he says.
