One half of a marriage living under a false identity, the other working homicide, and two performances that make the whole thing work while the procedural around them stays ordinary. The best version of this shape here. Difference: Flower of Evil resolves properly and its damage is real, where this one leaves questions standing that do not all look deliberate.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the wife starts investigating her own husband. Episode 1 opens with a scene that is hard to sit through.

A crime and a marriage running at the same speed, with no filler in twelve episodes. A kidnapping call in the first hour, a premise the show actually uses, and a lead playing cold better than warm. Difference: When the Phone Rings gets silly in its back half and ties everything off tidily, which is the opposite of this show's problem.

Hooks early Episode 1. The kidnapping call happens immediately and the marriage plot is running by minute twenty.

Money, betrayal and a slick surface, with the back half genuinely improving. Sixteen episodes, corruption mechanics that hold up, and a turn at episode seven that pays off through to the last two hours. Difference: Buried Hearts spends its last hour undoing itself, and it is a political crime story rather than a romance with a scheme in it.

Slow start Episode 7, and it genuinely improves from there: the ratings climb through the back half and the last two hours are the best of the run.

A household where the crime and the marriage are the same problem. Sixteen episodes built on somebody whose work is exposure discovering the story is her own, and a supporting performance that lifts every scene it is in. Difference: Nothing Uncovered has no attraction to complicate it, so the pull that makes this tense is missing.

Hooks early Episode 1. The body and the reporter's own exposure both arrive in the opening hour.

A contract at the centre of a romance, and one party is clearly using the other. Sixteen episodes where the first four hours are genuinely fun and the leads are well matched. Difference: My Demon is a supernatural romcom that runs out of plot and fills nine hours with an inheritance war, so nothing in it is ever really at stake.

Slow start Episode 7, where the contract stops being a gag and the demon actually has something to lose.

A woman doing something unforgivable early and living inside the consequences. Fourteen episodes, an extraordinary lead performance, and a show that never pretends the cost can be paid off. Difference: Wonderful World is grief rather than fraud, and it is much heavier than anything this show asks of you.

Hooks early Episode 1. The loss, the killing and the prison sentence are all inside the first hour. There is no slow build.
