Cheese in the Trap

Two of the same cast, the same campus, the opposite temperature. Lee Sung Kyoung and Nam Joo Hyuk carry over, and both shows are precise about how a Korean university actually feels: group projects, scholarships, part-time shifts, the constant low-grade ranking. Difference: comfort 5 against comfort 3, and nobody in it is dangerous, so the unease that defines Cheese in the Trap is entirely absent.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the two leads start colliding on purpose.

The same university read as a social system. Webtoon source, campus hierarchy, a male lead whose quiet is hard to interpret, and a heroine managing other people's assessment of her constantly. Difference: it likes its characters and it is a great deal warmer, and its back half is not the production disaster this one's is.

Hooks early Episode 1. The surgery and the first day of class are both done inside the hour.

Kim Go Eun's register, and the same withheld motive. Both are built on a relationship where one person's intent is the mystery and you are left sitting in the discomfort. Same slow pace, same refusal to reassure. Difference: it is an adult revenge melodrama with no campus and no comedy, and it follows through on its premise.

Slow start Episode 4, once the revenge plan stops being a plan and becomes a habit of seeing each other.

University adjacent, and the manners are the plot. Same interest in how carefully people at that age negotiate, same low-volume conflict, same sense that the institution is the antagonist. Difference: it is kind. Nobody in Run On is manipulating anybody, so the specific dread here is replaced by consideration.

Slow start Episode 3, once all four leads stop explaining themselves and start talking.

The same powerlessness, ten years older. Both are about somebody without the right background trying to survive inside a structure designed by other people, and both treat that structure as immovable. Difference: it is an office drama with romance 0, so the relationship that drives Cheese in the Trap is not on the table at all.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the sales team starts treating him like a person rather than a filing error.

Youth handled honestly, with an unhappy frame. Same willingness to let young people be small and selfish, same interest in what a shared institution does to a friendship. Difference: it is a nostalgia melodrama with a sad structure baked in, and the male lead is straightforwardly good, which removes the central question.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the two of them start meeting at night. Episode 1 is loud and abrasive on purpose, and it is the easiest place to quit.

If the second lead was your reason, this is the show that does it properly. Same era of Korean television, same trick of a magnetic third party who reorganises the central pair, except here he is written as a friend and a brother instead of a romantic obstacle, so nobody has to lose for him to matter. Difference: it is a period fantasy about the colonial resistance with a supernatural frame, so the campus realism and the social claustrophobia are gone, and it is warm where this is cold.

Hooks early Episode 1. The typewriter and the debt arrive in the first hour, and the show still asks for patience, because the early episodes are deliberately slow.
