When the Camellia Blooms
동백꽃 필 무렵Checked and re-read
A single mother running a bar in a town where everyone talks about her, plus a serial killer, plus the most straightforwardly decent man on Korean television, and all three somehow fit. Gong Hyo Jin plays someone who has apologised for existing her whole life and stops doing it, and Kang Ha Neul is the warmest romantic lead here. The mystery is functional rather than clever, and forty parts means several detours that go nowhere. What it gets right is the town: gossip as a weapon, community as the thing that finally protects her. It ends kindly and earns it.
Dongbaek is a single mother. When a potential new love enters her life, she finds ways to defy the social stigmas surrounding her.
Hooks early Episode 2, once the town starts talking about her and Yong-sik starts visibly not caring.
