The food show this one gets watched after, and it is the better one for four hours. A modern chef falls into Joseon and cooks for a tyrant, and Lee Chae Min plays the king as a spoiled connoisseur who is only dangerous when the food is bad. The cooking carries real weight because the stakes are real. Difference: Bon Appetit has a tyrant and a clock, and then discovers it has twelve episodes to fill, so it fails later and harder.

Slow start Episode 3, once the cooking competition format kicks in. The ratings peak at episode 4 and never get back there.

Same network, same year, a craft product and a sensitive maker. A liquor salesperson has to sell beer made by a brewmaster who feels everything, and the village around them does most of the work. It is the version of this premise where the couple is healthy and the comedy comes from the neighbours. Difference: Brewing Love's leads are kind to each other from the start, so there is no rivalry to power the first four episodes.

Slow start Episode 3, once the brewery plot and the romance are pointed in the same direction.

Cooking as the entire engine, with the romance removed. A military cooking drama with a video-game quest overlay, ridiculous enough to be fun, and Park Ji Hoon is likeable across twelve episodes that sustain the gimmick better than anyone expected. Difference: Kitchen Soldier has no love story to fumble, which is the exact failure that sinks the back half here.

Hooks early Episode 1, which opens at the highest rating of the run. The quest gimmick is explained fast and then gets out of the way.

A side-dish shop, food as care, and adults handling it. The banchan business is treated as a real business, the age-gap romance is played by two people with histories, and the cooking is what connects them rather than what decorates them. Difference: Crash Course in Romance runs a serial-killer subplot underneath, and it hits harder than the genre promises.

Slow start Episode 3, once the side-dish shop and the cram school collide properly.

Kang Ha Neul, a small business, and a town with opinions about it. A single mother running a bar in a place where everyone talks about her, plus the most straightforwardly decent man on Korean television. If the appeal was a restaurant worth protecting, this is that at forty half hours. Difference: Camellia takes its threat seriously and follows through on it, where the antagonists here face no consequences at all.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the town starts talking about her and Yong-sik starts visibly not caring.

The corporate heir against the worker, with the craft taken out. Same class structure, same glossy production, same boardroom subplot, and two leads doing all the lifting. Difference: King the Land has no trade and no skill anywhere in it, so the one thing this show is genuinely good at is missing.

Hooks early Episode 1. The heir and the smiling hotel clerk meet in the first twenty minutes and the show never complicates that.
