A supernatural establishment that serves the dead, a proprietor working off a debt measured in centuries, and one guest per episode with unfinished business. Difference: it is a melodrama at heart, glamorous and bittersweet, so it will actually make you cry where this one only gets close.

Slow start Episode 3, once the hotel staff get histories of their own.

Supernatural civil service, case per episode, same clipboard energy. Same idea that the afterlife has departments, targets and a boss, and the same structure of a small team fixing one person's life per hour. Difference: the cases are suicide interventions at heavy 5, so it is far heavier and needs rationing, one episode a day rather than four in a row.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the case-of-the-week structure clicks into place.

The other Korean myth comedy about a debt between a spirit and a woman who can see ghosts. Same appetite for folklore treated as contract law, same swings between slapstick and dread. Difference: twenty episodes, rough effects in places you will notice, and the first five are hard work before it becomes watchable.

Slow start Episode 5, once the contract between them is actually binding.

Grudges resolved by supernatural authority, one case at a time. Same pleasure in a creative punishment fitted to the crime, and the same kind of lead who is far more entertaining than the plot around her. Difference: the punishments are crueller, and a romance keeps interrupting the good part, which is Park Shin Hye.

Hooks early Episode 1. A demon takes over a judge and starts executing murderers, and the format is set inside one hour.

The dead, the nearly dead, and one place they all pass through. Same premise of a threshold business staffed by somebody who knows more than the customers, same episodic reveals. Difference: eight quiet episodes at a much lower temperature, and it is grief where this one is comedy.

Slow start Episode 5, where the strangers turn out to be one story and the horror framing shows what it has actually been doing.

An absurd premise played sincerely, which is this show's whole method. Same trust that a ridiculous setup can hold real feeling if the ensemble commits, comfort 5 and eight episodes with no filler. Difference: superheroes rather than spirits, no rules to learn, and the first two hours are the worst two.

Slow start Episode 3. The first two hours are loud and shapeless and the powers are played as a gag; from three onward the trio becomes a unit and the 1999 doomsday setting starts doing real work.
