Same writer, same trap, a family inside it. Jung Yi Do again on people absorbed by something coercive, and the frightening part is how reasonable every step looks. Seo Yea Ji is excellent as a woman who understands exactly what has happened to her and cannot get out, and the cult is never made stupid. Difference: there is a rescue attempt running through it, so it offers a hope that Strangers from Hell withholds.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the family is inside and the door closes behind them.

The same suspicion of the person next to you, written far better. Two policemen each certain the other is a murderer, held ambiguous for eight full hours by two actors who never tip the answer. Same claustrophobia of a small place where everybody knows everybody. Difference: it is a rigorous mystery with a complete answer, not a mood, and the violence is much less intimate.

Slow start Episode 3, the point at which you stop trusting both leads at once.

A guesthouse, a guest, and no explanation offered. Eight hours of dread built almost entirely out of a stranger who will not leave, with Go Min Si genuinely frightening in the middle of it. Same structure of an ordinary building becoming the threat. Difference: the writing underneath is thin, the woman at its centre is a closed door for all eight hours, and the two timelines take three episodes to start speaking.

Slow start Episode 3, if you are still there. The two timelines finally start speaking to each other.

Cruelty organised into a system. A girls' school ranked by anonymous monthly vote, which turns bullying into politics rather than melodrama, and every alliance shifts for a reason. Same reading of an enclosed group as inherently dangerous. Difference: it is a fight the lead can actually win, and the hierarchy is legible where Strangers from Hell keeps its neighbours unreadable.

Hooks early Episode 1. The monthly popularity vote and the class ranking it creates are laid out immediately.

Six episodes, no filler, no mercy. Three stories of greed colliding, and not one person in them who behaves better than the situation allows. Same commitment to following the consequence all the way down. Difference: the structure is the pleasure here, so it is cold and clever rather than suffocating, and there is no single place you are trapped in.

Slow start Episode 3, once the separate timelines start colliding and the structure becomes the point of the whole thing.

Confinement satire, deliberately unpleasant. Eight people, eight floors, money accruing by the second, and a slide into cruelty that needs no masked guard to explain it. Same argument that the container creates the behaviour. Difference: it is a satire with a thesis, so it wants you thinking rather than flinching.
