Difference: it is a school, not an arena, so the horror has to come from the arithmetic instead of the spectacle.

Slow start Episode 3, once the separate timelines start colliding and the structure becomes the point of the whole thing.

The other Korean show about a system that gives you no exit and rewards whoever is willing to escalate. Yeon Si Eun wins fights by planning them, which is exactly how player 456 survives the games he survives. Difference: the violence is school violence, close and unglamorous, with no format to hide behind.

If the VIP scenes were the part that interested you, this is that idea taken seriously: twelve episodes of people who own the country deciding what happens to everyone below them. Sul Kyung Gu and Kim Hee Ae play two monsters who are both partly right. Difference: it is all argument and no action, and it expects you to follow a cabinet reshuffle.

Hooks early Episode 1. The prime minister makes his move against the president inside twenty minutes.

The revenge version, where the powerless get a phone number instead of a rigged game and somebody actually collects. It is the catharsis the island refuses to hand out, structured as a case per week. Difference: it is fun, and it lets the good guys win, which drains the dread completely.
