Because you loved 지옥 2021 · Netflix · 6 episodes, about 5 hours in total Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi & Fantasy Streaming: Netflix Change drama

Otherworldly things arrive to name a date and then come back to collect, and the show is not about them: it is about the church that grows into the space the panic leaves behind. A 7.5 from 26,480 ratings with 8.67 for acting and 7.92 for story is the gap that matters, because the craft is real and the pleasure is not. Six episodes, a time jump in the middle, and the argument thins out on the other side of it. Everything below is picked for the doctrine and for how a society behaves under it rather than for the creature work, which is the worst thing in it.

Narrow it down 7 of 7

The order is our own call on how close two shows feel, not a score a machine worked out. Closest thing we have means the same experience in a different costume, shares one strong thread means one thing carries over, and same feeling, different angle means it gets you to the same place by another route.

2017OCN16 ep~60 min~16h total

Closest thing we have

A church filling the space a private catastrophe leaves, one reasonable step at a time. Same subject exactly, doctrine as shelter for people with nowhere else to stand, and the same refusal to make the believers stupid, which is what makes either of them frightening. Difference: sixteen episodes of provincial thriller with nothing supernatural in it, so the horror is entirely human, and the middle repeats itself.

Closest thing we have

A system that turns desperation into a spectacle, and everybody who agrees to watch it. Same bleak reading of how people organise themselves around cruelty, nine episodes at heavy 5 and comfort 1, and the same refusal to hand anybody a hero. Difference: a game with rules you can watch somebody break, so it is a thriller with momentum where this is an argument, and it holds up across all nine hours.

Shares one strong thread

Cruelty arrived at by consent, with no monster to blame for it. Same interest in how a group talks itself into something and then keeps going, eight episodes at heavy 5 and comfort 1, and the same deliberate absence of fun. Difference: a satire of the death game wave with a narrator on top, no theology anywhere in it, and the middle is punishing by design.

Sweet Home

2020Netflix10 ep~52 min~8.5h total

Shares one strong thread

Webtoon horror where the neighbours are the plot and the supernatural is the setup. Same shape of ordinary people sealed in with something that cannot be reasoned with, ten episodes at heavy 4, and creature design carrying more of the idea than the script does. Difference: an ensemble assembled to survive together rather than to debate each other, corridor dread instead of doctrine, and melodrama underneath it all.

Same feeling, different angle

An institution assembling itself around an infestation nobody understands yet. Same attention to the task force and the paperwork of an impossible event, six episodes at pace 5, and the same cold procedural surface. Difference: a countdown fight structure with heavy gore, one woman at the centre rather than a movement, and it is built to be enjoyed.

Same feeling, different angle

A vote deciding who deserves what happens to them next. Same mechanism under the genre, sanctioned cruelty with a procedure attached, and ten episodes at pace 5 that treat it as politics rather than melodrama. Difference: a classroom rather than a country, nothing supernatural in it and no doctrine to argue about, and it keeps a centre you can stand on.

Death's Game

Same feeling, different angle

Judgement handed down from outside, as a procedure with no appeal in it. Same premise of a sentence issued by something that does not explain itself, and the same use of the supernatural to argue about what a life is worth, eight episodes at pace 5 and heavy 5. Difference: it never leaves the perspective of the one being judged, borrowed lives rather than a movement, and its argument is the weakest part of it.

Skip these

Commonly suggested, and wrong

Train to Busan

The reflex pairing for Korean apocalypse, and it is a film about a man, his daughter and a moving train. The pleasure is momentum and sentiment, both of which this refuses. Six hours of a country arguing about doctrine is not what anybody comes out of that film wanting.

The Silent Sea

Paired for the short Netflix run and the dread. It is a slow science-fiction procedural in a sealed lunar station, with a mystery to be solved and no crowds anywhere in it. The subject here is a society reorganising itself around a supernatural sentence, which needs a country rather than a corridor.

Kingdom

Suggested because both are period-adjacent Netflix horror with a political layer. Kingdom is scale, momentum and court intrigue with a plague underneath, and it moves at pace 5. This is a theological argument with two demonstrations in it, and nobody arriving for the sweep of Kingdom wants a sermon.

A note on method

Matching starts from attributes we set by hand: pace, how much romance drives the plot, emotional weight, comfort. Then a title only stays if it holds up against the whole run of the show and earns a one-sentence reason for being on this list. Full method.
