The one show that genuinely earns the comparison. Two policemen who each have good reason to suspect the other, in a town that has quietly agreed not to look. Same patience, same refusal to explain a character before you have watched him for six hours, same total absence of romance. Difference: it trades institutional scale for two men and one street, so it is more intimate and more upsetting.

Slow start Episode 3, the point at which you stop trusting both leads at once.

The same intelligence pointed at a different institution. Profilers arguing for a method nobody in the building wants, across twelve episodes that never once reach for a cheap thrill. Difference: episodic rather than one continuous conspiracy, and the antagonist is bureaucratic inertia rather than a person with a name.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the first interview subject starts talking and the method becomes visible.

Kim Eun-hee's other great one, and the more popular of the two. Cold cases, a genre hook, and the same conviction that police work is a moral question before it is a puzzle. Difference: it has a fantastical mechanism and a much warmer heart, where Stranger is all procedure.

Hooks early Episode 1. The walkie-talkie premise is set up and paid off inside the first hour.

The legal-procedural cousin. A death inside a mock-trial classroom, then sixteen episodes of very smart people arguing statutes at each other with real stakes attached. Difference: it is a campus show with a young ensemble, so it is faster, brighter and far more willing to entertain you.

Hooks early Episode 1. A professor dies in a mock-trial classroom before the opening credits.

Ten episodes of judges disagreeing about children, with no romance, no jokes and no comfortable position available to the viewer. It shares Stranger's core belief that the system itself is the subject. Difference: episodic and colder, and it offers nothing that resembles a win.

Hooks early Episode 1, and it is the hardest case in the series. Nothing later is easier to sit through, and the show never lets up.

An unexpected match that works. Swap the prosecution service for a trading company and the argument is identical: an institution running on hierarchy, and one person inside it declining to behave. Difference: no crime at all. The tension is entirely about work, which is either the best thing about it or a dealbreaker.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the sales team starts treating him like a person rather than a filing error.

If you want the sustained tension without the institutional patience. A wife realises she does not know who her husband is, and the show holds that for sixteen episodes without cheating once. Difference: it is a melodrama at heart where Stranger is a ledger.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the wife starts investigating her own husband. Episode 1 opens with a scene that is hard to sit through.
