Watch this one first if you have not: the friendships are twenty years deep and the payoff is cumulative. Difference: the leads are senior consultants rather than terrified juniors, so the fear that drives Resident Playbook is replaced by ease and nostalgia.

Hooks early Episode 2, when the band and the friendship rhythm take over from the medical cases.

The same writer's room instinct in a completely different institution. New arrival, incomprehensible rules, an ensemble of people you expect to dislike and do not, comedy and cruelty in the same scene. Difference: the setting is a prison, so the warmth has to be earned against much worse odds, and the pace is slower for the first four episodes.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the cell mates are introduced properly.

For the medicine as spectacle. Eight episodes, no romance, a surgeon who breaks every hospital policy, and resuscitation sequences shot like action scenes. Difference: it is a competence fantasy with one hero at the centre, where Resident Playbook is an ensemble about how much you can get wrong in your first year. Much faster, much shallower.

Hooks early Episode 1. A surgeon arrives from a war zone and starts breaking hospital policy inside twenty minutes. There is no slow build anywhere in the eight episodes.

Rookies inside an institution that is understaffed and indifferent, learning the job on shift. Same interest in the gap between training and reality. Difference: it is a police station rather than a ward, and it is a considerably heavier watch, with a bleakness about the system that this show keeps at arm's length.

Slow start Episode 3, after the training arc ends.

If the appeal was young people being bad at something and slowly getting better, surrounded by adults who mean well. Same ensemble warmth, same coming of age structure, same low stakes that somehow matter. Difference: it is a sports comedy for a family audience with no professional jeopardy, so nothing in it costs anyone their career.

Hooks early Episode 2, once the village and the badminton team are both set up.

The definitive Korean drama about being the least experienced person in the building. A trading company, a hierarchy that runs on unspoken rules, and a newcomer absorbing all of it. Difference: almost no comedy and no found family, and it offers no reassurance anywhere in it. It is the unsentimental version of the same first year.
