A Shop for Killers

A young woman turned into a weapon by a man who claimed to be protecting her. Same premise, opposite method: My Name shows the training and the cost of it in full rather than withholding it, and the fight choreography is the best in this bracket. Both end up asking what a guardian owes the child he shaped. Difference: there is no puzzle box here. It is linear, and much heavier on the emotional damage.

Hooks early Episode 1. The father dies in the first fifteen minutes and the deal is struck immediately.

One man walking through a criminal structure, floor by floor. If the appeal was the mechanical clarity of Ji An's house siege, this is that discipline stretched across a gang war: each episode a target, no fat, no romance, no jokes. Pace 5 and it holds. Difference: it is noir all the way down where A Shop for Killers keeps a family at its centre, and there is no warmth anywhere in it.

Hooks early Episode 1. A brother is dead, a man walks back into the organisation he left, and the violence starts immediately. Seven episodes of forty minutes with nothing spare.

Loan sharks, a fortress, and two people who can genuinely fight. Both are built around physical competence being the only currency that matters, and both stage their violence so you can see it. The bromance does the job Ji An's uncle does: somebody chose you and now you owe them. Difference: it is warmer and more moral, with clean heroes and a villain who is simply enjoying himself.

Hooks early Episode 1. The boxing gym and the loan-shark hook are both done inside one episode.

Six episodes, one rule, no padding. The other 2024 Korean genre piece that treats runtime as a resource. Both hinge on a body that knows things the mind does not, and both are edited by somebody who has watched an action film. Difference: it is horror with real gore, and the emotional core is a truce rather than an inheritance.

Hooks early Episode 1. The infection and the uneasy truce inside one body are both established inside forty minutes.

An operation, a plan, and the moment the target understands. Shares the pulpy pleasure of watching preparation pay off, with a support team doing the surveillance work Ji An has to do alone. Sixteen episodes of it, so there is plenty. Difference: it is episodic and case-driven, and the cases are drawn from real crimes, which makes it uglier than the house siege.

Hooks early Episode 1. The format is fully established inside the first case.

A childhood that has to be reconstructed before the present makes sense. Same shape as the flashback spine of A Shop for Killers: the answer sits in a house somebody grew up in, and the adult version has to be told what happened to them. Difference: it is a procedural mystery, not an action show. Nobody here can fight.

Hooks early Episode 1. A profiler is the prime suspect in her own uncle's murder, and the puzzle cards start arriving immediately.
